As brought to you by [livejournal.com profile] ontogenesis, reply to this meme by yelling "Words!" and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Please post them in your journal and explain what they mean to you.

My words were... )

...as voted upon by NPR listeners and ganked from [livejournal.com profile] pussreboots. Apparently the NPR audience divides pretty evenly between people who take brain candy to the beach and people who take serious literature. The titles I've read cover to cover are bolded, the titles I've yet to finish are underlined, the titles I own but haven't read yet are italicized, and hotlinks redirect to my reviews of the novels or authors in question. That will be all.

...here's a meme created by and ganked from the lovely [livejournal.com profile] theosakakoneko:

100 Books for Understanding Contemporary Japan

So, The Nippon Foundation has assembled a team of scholars and produced a list of 100 Books for Understanding Contemporary Japan, which is linked here. (PS: Would it have killed them to list the authors while putting in those obnoxious links to the Amazon "rewards" program?) I've bolded the one's I've read cover-to-cover, underlined the ones I haven't yet completed, and italicised the ones I own but haven't started yet.

I was really surprised to find that Hirohito and the Making of Modern Japan, Embracing Defeat, and Japan's Reluctant Realism didn't make the list.

That will be all.

Your result for The Cultural Identity Test...

The Liberal Philosopher

50% Traditionalism, 68% Knowledge, 72% Diversity, 45% Contemporary and 48% Untraditionalism!

12314168322890489057.jpeg___1_500_1_2000_7fa54554_.jpg

You Scored 72% Liberal Philosopher, Congratulations!

Diversity! Cultural awareness! Sharing! Caring!

Congratulations, you're a liberal philosopher! Perhaps a bit bleeding heart at times, and maybe a little too nice for your own good, you nevertheless bring a strong sense of individualism and unity to those around you. Liberating the minds of the traditionalists from their stodgy conformity, you seek to spread the good will of peace, understanding, and diversity.

You likely find little value in the traditions of old, and instead see them as myopic and intolerant. You are very progressive in your ideas towards race and heritage, and are probably pretty much colour blind. Which is good for you, because there's no better way to lead than by example.

You are probably more sensitive to the ideas of other cultures, sometimes even at the expense of your own! But you see this as a good thing, because after all, how can diversity prosper if we cling to our own ways more tightly than to those others? It's a big, beautiful world out there, and you just can't wait to share it with everyone.

Because I saw it on [livejournal.com profile] sara_tanaquil's lj and it looked cool, here is 2008 in retrospect, brought to you by my first lj posts of each month.

1月
Quoting directly from Alan Dupont's East Asia Imperilled:
There follows an improbable story about power stations and earthquakes. I thought it was funny, at least.

2月
Happy Brighid's Day...
...to those who celebrate such things.

3月
Yes, I'm behind again. But only because one of these books was so gadawful bad that I needed some time to recover before I could confront it again.
It was a horrible book, but alas, far from the worst I'd read in 2008.

4月
Including two novels and a poetry collection.

5月
Finals, and I'm behind again. But I'll be caught up soon.
Something tells me this'll pretty much be it from here on out.

6月
Only two English-language books this week, because I spent most of it reading every volume of Saiyuki available in the house, after which I started in on some other random manga.
Saiyuki. It's like herpes, in a way.

7月
Work is a whole 'nother story, and last weekend is a tale unto itself.
Ah, the Ambassador snafu. It's gonna take some more time before it becomes an amusing story for me to tell as opposed to flashback to hell.

8月
I think this probably makes me, like, the Antichrist or something...
...I got off my butt and saw The Dark Knight tonight.
I remain fully underwhelmed. At least the parodies are good.

9月
Yes.
THIS.
Oh, Joe Biden. Thank god the McCain camp chose someone with your verbal gaffs on a powerup for their veep pick.

10月
I read six books from September 15-21. It was also the week during which I moved back to Japan; thus the lateness of this post.
Yup. I moved back to Japan in September. But you'd never know it from the posts, eh?

11月
Just popping in to say...
GO OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!
That was me in the first floor lounge, streaming election coverage over the net like an addict.

12月
Delayed for 紅葉. I'll post this week's round-up tomorrow, but in the meantime, ( here's the book I read last week.
No Internets at home meant no obligatory 紅葉 picspam, but I did go, and there were pictures.

That will be all.

I'm it!

Step 1: I was tagged by [livejournal.com profile] theosakakoneko. Schweet. The person who tagged her apparently numbered their answers in Japanese. Koneko went with kanji. Imma shake things up a bit and go with kana.

Step 2: Here are the rules for the meme:

1. Link to the person who tagged you.
2. Post the rules on your blog.
3. Write six random things about yourself.
4. Tag six people at the end of your post and link to them.

Step 3:

ア. I don't do drugs. I can't afford them, what with my Book Habit. I finished my 150th book of the year yesterday, and promptly celebrated by going out and buying another eight. (Actually, this was a total accident, but my *favorite* bookstore in 寺町 is going bankrupt so their entire stock is currently 50% off. As far as I'm concerned, that's like telling a junkie you'll never sell him heroin again, but that he can buy as much as he likes from you now at half off. I mean, jesus. These people have U of Hawaii books. On the shelves.

イ. My spoken Japanese has recently undergone a crazymad level up, all thanks to me realising that the teachers I had in uni and the authors of the textbooks I'd been using wanted me to speak the language like a 1960s-era Japanese woman, not the way women actually speak it today.

ウ. I spotted what I believe are some pretty egregious errors in some Korean flashcards someone else made, and was quite satisfied with myself. I currently suck at speaking, but I can read newspaper articles with some modest help from a dictionary, and I think my listening comprehension is improving (albeit slowly).

エ. I think Rachel Maddow is one of the most awesomest things in the universe right now. Finally someone on television who is not only crazy intelligent, but isn't afraid to show it and doesn't feel the need to prove that she really is "feminine" even though she is smart.

オ. I think Sarah Palin is the Stephenie Meyer of the political world. I heartily dislike them both, but god they entertain me.

カ. For my next trick, I would like to learn Lao.

And taggage: [livejournal.com profile] bran420_7, [livejournal.com profile] wombatdeamor, [livejournal.com profile] metal_dog5, [livejournal.com profile] bloody_american, [livejournal.com profile] demeter918, [livejournal.com profile] dark_waterlily.

Full disclosure: Yes, I "cheated." I cheated like a motherfucker. If you don't like it, then you try finding pictures of DJ Flywheel or Anabraxis. Hell, even the ones I kept are going to be hard. Akujunkan's Zanpakutō:

...which means I'm not going to post TWIB until Monday. So, in the meantime, I give you:

You Have Not Been Ruined by American Culture

You're nothing like the typical American. In fact, you may not be American at all.
You have a broad view of the world, and you're very well informed.
And while you certainly have been influenced by American culture (who hasn't?), it's not your primary influence.
You take a more global philosophy with your politics, taste, and life. And you're always expanding and revising what you believe.

Like, duh!
