Any time there's a whole bunch of dialogue from Random Person/Student/Male etc, you can imagine a host of people talking, even if it looks as though it's only one person in my translation.
Rakan: "..........................."
"Sensei..."
Nurse: "Oh, Rakan-kun... What's the matter? Do you feel sick?
Rakan: "Um..."
"Outside..."
Nurse: "Outside?"
Nurse: "What about..."
Nurse: "Outside?"
Chapter Head: "An Invisible Assassin, Sent From Another World"
Rakan: Of course!
"......................"
"Uh, no, it's nothing."
"Sorry, but can I use this door?"
Nurse: "What? Sure."
Nurse: "Wait a minute! Not in your indoor shoes!"*
Rakan: "(Sorry, I'm in a hurry.)"

Other people really can't see any of it - not that weird grass; not Chigusa; not Narushige; or that strange man.

*((Japanese ,don't wear shoes indoors. However, you can't spend all day at school or work barefoot, so people have a separate set of indoor shoes for those places. The nurse is peeved because Rakan's wearing his indoor school shoes outside.))
Rakan: Chigusa's been hurt again. That guy shot him with another of those strange tree guns. Not that I heard the gunshot or anything. I suppose that strange grass can mute sound or something.
I suppose I should be happy that other people can't see any of it, but what should I do?
I should probably start by getting to Chigusa without anyone seeing me, especially that guy over there.
Why did he shoot Chigusa? What reason could he have? I don't understand this.
Touno: \\You Imposter Prince.\\
Rakan: I don't understand this, and I don't know what I should do, but at the very least I have to go and help.
Chigusa: \\Anyway, they heal really quickly.\\
Rakan: He said they heal.
Chigusa: \\And I don't feel pain either.\\
Rakan: And he said that he doesn't feel pain.

//Chigusa whips out a tree gun and shoots into thin air. He pulls on some of his blood, which begins to form bandages.//

Chigusa: "There's a single man standing in the place where I just shot, right in front of me. He's about three meters in front of that building. His body is wrapped in Mirror Vineweed."
Narushige: "Mirror Vineweed!? You mean like 'Disappearing Grass?'"
"What on earth is Mirror Vineweed doing in this place at this time?"
Chigusa: "I have no idea either. At the moment..."
Narushige: "(And how can you see it?)"
Chigusa: "(Because my eyes are good.)"
"...could I ask you to cut off the grass?"
Narushige: !
Narushige: "I understand. Cutting off the grass it is. Kou!"
//Kou transforms into his sword form//
Touno: ".............."
Wha- What is this? His wounds are... They're bandaging themselves...
And he's looking. He's looking at me.
He can see me!? He truly is a monster..!!

//Touno and Chigusa shoot at one another and Narushige slashes with Kou. The seedpod bullets from Touno's gun fall harmlessly to the ground as Kou slashes through the Mirror Vineweed.//

Chigusa: "So you can see him now, Shigeka Narushige. He a friend of yours?"
Narushige: "No... (I don't know who he is.)"

Chigusa: Then all I've got to do is hazard removal.
"Well then, let's clean up."
//Rakan slams Chigusa across the back of the head with a branch.//

Rakan: "Do NOT SHOOT PEOPLE!!"
"(It's dangerous.)"
And also, how are your wounds!! Are you okay!?"
Chigusa: "(Yeah.)"
Narushige: What a contradiction!!
Chigusa: "So shooting people is bad?"
Rakan: "Yes, it's bad!!"
Chigusa: "But he was attacking us."
Rakan: "He can't use that gun anymore! Right?"
Chigusa: "You're a kind person, Rakan."
Rakan: "It has nothing to do with being kind! It's common knowledge!!"
Chigusa: "I like you so much it's going to cause me problems later on."
Rakan: "That man is from the other world, isn't he? So it'll be better to talk to him..."

Readers who have eaten their carrots will remember me agonising about this here. Apparently, Chigusa's family name was written with the character for 'silver' back in the day.))
Touno: "But they say that that's been the fate of that family through generations. It was horrible, and so they were quarantined on some cliffs far away from the rest of us, and chained up so they couldn't get out and return. That was the time their name was changed..."

Touno: ".....from Sengin to Senrou. 'Rou' is the character from 'routou'*. Chains. And that's why the Senrou are called 'The Family of Criminals.' And finally, they're down to their last member!"
Chigusa: "......................." Ah. ....I see. That's why it's said that we'll eventually all go mad.
*(('Routou' is a word that means 'prison' or 'dungeon.' Interestingly enough, the character 'rou' is so old fashioned it doesn't show up in either of my massive Japanese language character dictionaries. Sugiura's really done her homework on this one. I <3333 her so much!))
Chigusa: Now is not the time for me to start liking this child.
Rakan: "............................................................................................"
"Yeah. And?"*

Rakan: "Thanks for trying to tell me, but your explanation was so long I couldn't understand it."

Rakan: "So you could just have said that Chigusa just has an unusual body and that Narushige-san is just the result of a spontaneous mutation, right?"

So I'm guessing it was never stated how they make Sanome appear? Not like giving birth to them or anything? Because if it was so, that would make Rakan and Narushige of the same family, wouldn't it? And Rakan being male himself would also be considered an ill omen.
I'm guessing it's highly unlikely, but the possibilities intrigue me. ^^
In retrospect, all we know of the Sanome so far is that they have the power to make plants grow. But in saying that the Shigeka family makes Sanome appear, the latter sound like they were created sporadically, which would make sense if, like Chigusa, everyone else considered them tools.
But if Sanome can have children, like Rakan's mom, then there has to be a lineage of sorts which exists.
...or Rakan could just be a very special case, and not because he's apparently the only surviving Sanome at the moment. Which is more likely the case.

on 2004-07-03 07:09 am (UTC)I remember wondering whether Rakan and Narushige were relatives too, btw;) It really pricked my interest because Sugiura does seem to be setting up a threesome in the story (though with the appearance of Touno, things may have changed. Drat.)

on 2004-07-04 01:34 am (UTC)Ah, I wasn't hooked on this manga at first, but now that I've read the translations, it looks like Sugiura's given me yet another reason to learn Japanese. (I started learning Japanese in the first place to read Koori.)
Thank you thank you thank you for doing translations! Now I just have to try to guess what happened between this chapter and the current chapter 9, until you get translations for 7 & 8 done... (I just got the current issue of Ichiraci but haven't seen the two before; 2nd tankouban doesn't seem to be out in the US yet, so haven't seen that yet either.)
Touna must be the fourth guy in the title illustration for C9, the one with the bow? It looks like those worlds are getting steadily more intertwined...

on 2004-07-04 03:11 am (UTC)Hee, yes and no. I'd found it in the 'routou' compound, but didn't know what it meant on its own.
I'm almost finished editing chapter 7. It's the bestest bestest of them all. I <3 it to death. The problem is that there's a WHOLE LOT of humor and worse yet, plot, in 7 which is dependant on puns, so transing it is a bear.
And yup, Touno's the guy with the bow, which is interesting, because we've only seen him use swords and guns thus far.
Ooh, and if you're learning Japanese, Sugiura's a good place to start. She's as good an author as illustrator, and her Japanese is a lot closer to written Japanese than most mangaka's.

Did you translate from the magazine ? because I have the second tank with me and at the end of the chapter it seems that Sugiura draw a few more page (there's a second cuddling scene where Chigusa is called hentai by TT and Narushige called Rakan kawaii one more time) ?
This scene looks really cute... is there a way you could translate that part too ? pretty please ? ^___^ *I will shower you with naked Chigusa)
