I went to city hall to finalise my new lease today. (All together now: HALLELUJAH!!!!) The woman walking me through it was really, really, funny. She explained the filling out of the lease, going to collect the key, and utilities deal step by step, pausing to say things like:
"Now, your water will be turned on the day before you move in. Do you understand 'water'?"
and
"You'll have to walk to landlord's office to collect your key. Do you understand 'key'?"
It wasn't done in a patronising or sarcastic fashion; she really was worried that I might not understand what she was talking about. What made me giggle was the words she chose to worry over. If I understand 'landlord's office,' 'cosigner,' 'guarantor,' and 'natural disaster insurance,' then yes, the chances are likely that I'll understand 'electricity.'
Very, very cute.
And oh yes, the strategic oversight. Apparently everyone was supposing that I was going to move apartments by myself. I wish I could do a solo show here. I don't like asking people I'm comfortable with for help, and I'm not exactly comfortable with my coworkers (at least not to that level).
And I hope they don't say no, because then I'll be carrying my refrigerator, washer and dryer, televison, and the like down four flights of stairs, half a mile down the block, and then up another three flights.
I may just take to homelessness. There's less to consider that way.
That will be all.
