Well, they’ve sold me on socialist health care. About two years ago, I broke several bones in my foot. I ended up wearing an orthopaedic brace for about three months as a result, and nearly went insane because I wasn’t supposed to walk on it if I could help it, let alone run.

Two months or so ago, that foot started to hurt again. Badly. And then the pain started shooting up my let, all the way to the hip, as if my nerve was on fire. This would happen when I was lying down, sleeping. Then it started happening when I was sitting, and finally became constant.

I didn’t go to get it checked out because a) Japanese doctors scare me, and b) I didn’t want my foot in a brace (or worse) during my tropical vacation. And there would be times when the pain would disappear for a few days, which was not the case when the thing was broken.

I finally went to the doctor last Saturday morning. (Woke up at 7:00am to do it, gods help us all.) I was x-rayed twice, given a bone and joint examination, and had a doctor’s consultation. The good news is that the foot is not broken again. The bad news is that I’m suffering a massive joint inflammation. I’m not even supposed to stand while I’m teaching. (Yeah, right. Welcome to class, mtv unplugged style.)

I’m going crazy from lack of physical activity. But here’s the great news: the examination, consultation, two x-rays, anti-inflammatory drugs, and a week’s worth of poltices cost under fifteen dollars U.S. I walked into the doctor’s office ready to drop at least $200 and had it all on me when I came back out.

They’ve sold me on universal health care.

That will be all.

I had one x-ray and a splint put on my finger here and it cost me about $230...WITH insurance. *grumble*

You don't even want to know how much money I had to waste spend when my foot was broken.

And let's not even talk about the amount dropped for the vertebrae.
