Silver Diamond Part V (Translated)
Mar. 23rd, 2004 05:43 pmWhoo, is this one late, but it's much better because of it. Sugiura, being the amazing author that she is, keeps throwing wildcards into the mix, meaning that I have to go back and revise the earlier chapters. This chapter is awesome - you really need to buy the manga when it comes out, because this installment packs some real punch - both humorous and frightening - in the visual department.
I'm two chapters behind, partially because what Sugiura's done is inspiring me to write essays on the characters and plot. Yes, it's that good. But enough useless raving from me, you guys are all here to read the manga.
Silver Diamond: Part V
(Silver Diamond copyright 2003 by Sugiura Shiho)
(Translation copyright 2003 by gmorrison (hermestrismegistus at operamail.net))
I took the time to translate this, type it out and format it, so please don't take it without my permission.
As usual:
Words in " " are spoken aloud.
Words not in " " are internal dialogue.
Words in ( ) are character asides.
Words in {{ }} are Sugiura's asides.
Words in (( )) are my comments on the text/translation.
Words in [ ] are telepathic communication between two characters.
Words in // // are descriptions of action.
Words in \\ \\ are flashbacks.
Words preceeding an * will be footnoted at the page break.
Double returns = page breaks.
New ones:
Words in double double-quotations " " " " indicate when The Prince is speaking through Kinrei.
And because it'll probably help readers if I do this:
R: = Sawa Rakan
C: = Senrou Chigusa
N: = Shigeka Narushige
K: = Kou
KK: = Kingen Kinrei
P: = The Prince
Any time there's a host of quotes from Random Person/Student/Male etc, you can imagine a host of people talking, even if it looks as though it's only one person in my translation.
Narrator: It was like a scene from the End of Time.
Everything completely smothered by an impenetrable blanket of black clouds. The sun and the moon were completely hidden.
The sand continued to spread and the greenery continued to lose its colour.
The "Sanome" were disappearing, the "Ayame" increasing. Into this "World which was approaching The End..."
Narrator: ...one day, a lone child made his appearance.
Random Person: "What is that? That child is..."
Random Person #2: "Without carrying any sort of light with him..."
Child (a very young Prince; from now CP:): "....................................."
Kingen KinRei:K "He says, "I am The Child of the Gods."
RP: "Huh?"
RP #2: "What are you saying, KinRei?"
KK: "I can hear him. Inside my head. Directly..."
CP: //KinRei.//
//I am...//
CP: //Tell them that I am the person who will realise the hopes of this world.//
RP: "......................................"
Other RP: "......................................."
KK: "............................huh?"
Random People: "?"
Another RP: "Huh?"
((The Child Prince raises his hand and the moon appears in the sky.))
Random People: ".................................!?"
"That's...!"
"The moon?"
"The moon!? Can it be...."
"It's the moon!"
KK: "............................"
"He says, 'I am the One called The Prince.'"
Random People: So he's the child of the Gods......?
Radom Person: "KinRei, somehow, it seems that you alone seem to be able to hear the voice of 'His Highness The Prince.'"
"From now on, your name will be changed to Kinrei*. Please be the voice of The Prince."
"You have become the servant of the Gods. Isn't that wonderful, Kinrei?"
KK: "Yes, daddy."
CP: "......................."
KK: Yes, My Prince.
*((While the pronunciation of Kinrei's name doesn't change, the characters being used to write it do, which ultimately changes its meaning.))
RP: "His Highness The Prince certainly has mysterious eyes. It seems as if they are able to see things far away."
"He finds the seeds of plants no longer supposed to exist anywhere in the world."
"He finds places with water, and mercifully has Kinrei lead us to them."
"If His Highness were not here, we would already have been destroyed.
"He truly is the Child of the Gods."
RP: "The Gods sent Him to us to save this land......!"
KK: " "Happiness is not so far away." "
" "Eventually, we will be able to go to meet it." "
" "The awakening of the God who shines in the sands.... " He tells us, "This is my prophesy." "
Random Person: "What..."
ARP: "He's even able to see into the future.....!"
ARP: "A 'prophesy.'"
ANP: "He's given us a prophesy!"
ANP: "What's 'The awakening of the God who shines in the sands?'"
ANP: "'Shining in the sands'........?
ANP: "................................"
"It's the Sun!"
"The Prince already called the Moon back to us."
"Next is the Sun!"
"The Seeds of trees that will only grow in the light of the sun remain yet."
ANP: "As long as the sun comes out, the green things will all begin to slowly return."
ANP: "The Sun......"
ANP: "It's all due to the blessings that will return even to this desert."
ANP: "The Sanome are already gone, but as long as we live beneath The Prince, we'll be able to be happy."
ANP: "God is here."
ANP: "We are being guided by the Gods."
N: If this is the 'guidance' of an unseen God, what purpose was I born for......My Prince?
((Cut to Rakan's world, where the Terrible Trio are on a commuter train.))
Schoolgirls: ".........................."
SG: "...Hold on. Check out that Beautful People Zone."
SG: "That's North High's Sawa-kun. (He's famous, he's famous.)"
SG: "Ahh, so that's who he is!"
SG: "Woah! This is the first time I've seen him. He is seriously puuuuurty."
SG: "They really mean it when they say "flowers and beautiful boys." (I thought it was just a saying.)"
SG1: "So anyways, who are those two 'ornaments' on either side of him?"
SG2: "I'd guess they're his older brothers, right? They really are a gorgeous bunch of siblings."
SG1: "The "Beautiful Family" gene must be dominant, huh."
SG2: "(Yeah, but aren't beautiful people like that pretty rare in this world?)"
SG1:"(So it balances out 'The Early Death of Beautiful Women?')*"
SG2:"But anyway, they really stand out, don't they?"
SG1:"Yeah they do. Looking over there, it's as if only they..."
"You could almost say it feels like another world."
R: !
? Woah, that startled me.
What was that about, just now?
SG:Ah! He's looking at us!
R: Ah, I see. I guess these two would stand out, wouldn't they?
*((Japanese is filled with proverbs or axioms taken from China and consisting of four characters. The one used here is 'kajinhyakumei,' or 'gorgeous women short lives.'))
R: It'd really be nice if I didn't have to take them with me.
"Hey, you guys, do you absolutely have to be with me all the time?"
C: "Yes, this morning--"
N: "Senrou."
C: "Oh! Nothing..."
R: "?"
N: "You're important, so I have no choice but to protect you."
R: "Because I'm a Sanome, right?"
R: "That has nothing to do with this place, okay? I am not going to run into anything dangerous at all in this world."
"I'll be fine on my own."
((They make it to the school gate.))
"All right. That's far enough! No one but students and staff are allowed on school premises. No matter what. If you head to the bottom of this road, there'll be a park on the left. You can go stay there. Ah, I should give you the return tickets now. (You remember how to board the train, right?)"
"Well!"
It's just that I can't...
R: ...allow myself to grow too attached to these people.
N: "So what are we going to do?"
C: "We're going to wait here."
N: "...We sure are."
\\That morning\\
((Chigusa and Narushige are standing in the garden.))
N: "......................"
C: "Shigeka Narushige. Come here for a sec."
N: "What is it? (Watering the plants is your job!)"
C: "This is near the Distortion I told you about yesterday."
N: "(Huh? Where? Here?)"
C: "These plants have just recently been stepped on. ....During the night."
"Something has come here again."
"Although I don't know if it's one of the Ayame species or someone like us."
But something has...
\\
R: "But you were worried about the flowers, so you don't seem like a bad person."
\\
C: "......................"
Anyway... this is probably...
At any rate, it's better not to tell Rakan about it. I'd feel bad if I needlessly scared him.
"Shigeka Narushige. What do you think we should do about this?"
If nothing else, we'd best make sure Rakan doesn't find out about this.
"Can we investigate if anything strange has come here--"
N: "Whatever happened to trying to get by without liking Rakan too much?"
N: "Right? Remember our conversation yesterday?"
"(You're trying to avoid the issue!")
C: "Yeah. I thought I could somehow stop my feelings, but if you come to like something once, it seems it's useless from that point on."
"....Because it's much harder not to like him. I wonder if I'll be able to lead him peacefully back to our world."
N: "......................."
{{His head hurts}}
Still, it seems like his distress is evolving.....
I wonder if he came to like Rakan even more after thinking about him all night.
R: "(Hmmm.)"
N: "............................."
Well, it seems pretty tough except for talking about it. Probably, he's being very serious right now."
N: "Well, anyway..."
K: "What's going on, Senrou?! This is Relationship Counselling, isn't it!?"
N: "Kou."
K: "Morning*, Narushige!"
N: "('Morning?')"
K: "What's going on? What's going on? Are you lovesick!? Senrou!? Senrou!? Are you afraid to like him too much?"
{{He didn't say that!}}
K: "Are you saying that you'd feel powerless if you fell in love with him?"
N: "Kou, that's not what we were talking about."
K: "What do you mean? Senrou is a child of humans, isn't he?"
*((Kou uses the English transliteration, which means, once again, that Narushige has no idea what he's saying.))
K: "You've been overcome by this affection in an instant. If it's all right, I'll offer some advice."
C: "Thanks!"
N: He's agreeing?!!
K: "It's really very simple. Talking is the key! You're on your way to success!"
"You've got to endear yourself to your target even more!"
C: "Ah, of course! So the key is to make my target like me even more than now?"
K: "Yes!"
N: They're gelling with one another!!
"Ah, 'scuse me. Senrou, that's certainly the case, but if you'd really like to spend more time with him..."
What a weird turn this conversation's taken...
"...if you start by trying to persuade him..."
K: "Yes, yes! You've got to be aggressive!"
"(Go!* When you want to say, 'Do it!', you say 'Go!'!!)
"The more you make him like you, the more he'll listen to what you have to say!!"
*((You guessed it. Kou is using the English transliteration of "Go" here.))
N: "Kou? Shut up for a moment."
K: "Huh?"
C: "...You're right! I've got it."
"You mean I have to seduce him, right?"
K: "YES! That's it!"
N: That is not it!
C: "Thanks, you two. I see..."
N: He's even thanking us!!
C: "Now that you've put it like that, I can totally see it. So that's how it works..."
"(I get it. I get it.)"
N: Woah! I'm the only person who sees what's going on right now!!
C: "Now that I look at it like this..."
N: "........................."
C: "So I've got to seduce him. Good."
N: "Good?!"
K: "Go for it, Chigusa!!"
N: ".......................!!"
K: "I'm rooting for you, man!"
N: .................Rakan-kun....
C: "(You're a great snake.)"
K: "(Hee-hee!)"
N: .....I'm so sorry.
C: "(I've just now realised that!)"
K: "(I hope things work out for you!)"
N: Somehow...
This has just gotten incredibly weird.
\\
{{Study Hall: The teacher has caught a cold...}}
Random student(RS): "(Rakan-kun! Come chill with us!)"
Another RS: "(He's not going to do it.)"
RS #3: "(You're so boring, Rakan!)"
RS: "(Rakaaaan!)"
{{Rakan is a person who takes Study Hall very seriously.}}
Male Student(MS): "Rakan."
"The pro models have just increased their number to two."
R: "The pro models?"
MS: "Isn't that what they are? Those cousins of yours?"
R: "...............uh."
MS #2: "(Lessee - they're in a band!)"
MS #3: "(They're hosts!)"
MS #2: "(Small-time hoods!)"
MS #3: "They're... they're models!)"
MS: "Yeah, that's what they are."
MS #3: "(They're moralists! Tol- Tolstoi! Ic- Icarus!)"*
R: Aah, of course. Those two didn't go home at all, huh?
*((Wordplay that can't possibly be carried into English. Thus, you get the weirdness of the literal translation in place of the humor of the original.))
R: What should I do? I suppose I should go tell them to go home.
(I'd better think of something to tell the teachers.)
Maybe I should tell them to come here. It is study hall, after all.
But I really don't want to get too deeply involved.
I mean, they can go back there, after all. They'll end up going back, sometime. I... I...
\\N: "You're a Sanome, after all. You're mother was a Sanome too."\\
R: I... I don't know what it is.
R: Ah, honestly. It doesn't really matter what I think. I don't really even understand myself.
...Even so, it's not something I can ask about in detail.
After all, I don't want to get deeply involved. That's what I think, but they keep saying 'Sanome, Sanome,' and somehow it makes me really sad.
\\"Because I'm a Sanome, right?"\\
Wow. I'm sulking over this. That's embarrassing.
Well, it can't be helped. They're going back, and all. Since they're people who come from the world where 'Sanome are important!'" Because they're people from that world.
....................................
Ah, enough. I'm probably originally from that world too. It's 98% probable.
99%... Probably 100%....
But I was raised entirely in this world, perfectly normally. I like living a normal life. I like to study. I like doing housework too. I really like normal meals with rice, misoshiru, and fish.
Aaah! I don't even know what I'm talking about anymore.
....What on earth is going on? What should I do??
((A fey-looking seinen, his clothing wrapped with vines, appears on the veranda outside the classroom.))
Strange man(SM): "I've got to hand it to you."
"You've got a perfect impersonation of The Prince."
RS: "Yeah, they're over there, standing behind the bicycle parking area."
((He points right through the SM.))
RS #4: "Really?"
R: !?
...Wha!?
Wait a min-- Are you telling me no one sees that?
R: !!
RS #4: "What's wrong, Rakan?"
R: "...................."
R: "Isn't there someone outside the window? (On the veranda?)"
RS #4: "Huh? No, no one. No one's been there at all."
RS: "What's up with you? You seeing ghosts?"
R: Didn't any one see him? Can anyone see him? What the hell is going on right now!?
R: Speaking of, once again, it's obviously someone from there.
R: ............NOT AGAIN.
\\SM:'A perfect impersonator of The Prince.'\\
R: "?"
RS: "Rakan?"
Random Students: "?"
((SM is walking about on the school grounds. Clouds of students and teachers ignore him.))
SM: These plants are amazing. They really can't see me. This is awesome. This is Awesome!.
: Thanks to them, I can walk around and look at everything. I get the basics, a little.
:Substances are different. The environment is different. Things' forms are different, too.
This world is awesome! Nothing but things I've never seen before.
Well, not that I could see anything before, anyway, but still. This so freakin' fun.
Nothing but amazing things!
And all of it - all of it! - is thanks to The Prince.
\\Prince: "Open your eyes, Touno Touji."\\
\\SM (hereafter TT): ".................................."
"............................... "
"...................................I can see!"
"My eyes... I can use my eyes!!"
"I can see!! My Prince!! Kinrei-sama!!"
TT:"I... Thank you!! Why... did you go to the trouble of healing my eyes...?"
KK: "Yes, My Prince."
"He says, "Even you were born for a reason." "\\
TT: My Prince. Kinrei-sama. I'll do anything, if it's for your sake. I'll even go to an unknown world.
\\KK: "...............These vines have a special property that creates a transparent membrane in the area around any object wrapped within them."
KK: "They eliminate all sound. Furthermore, nothing can escape outside their bounds. They create a shield that reflects the surrounding scenery back at anyone who looks at them. And so, the object contained within these vines cannot be seen by anyone who's not inside of them."
"So that you will not change a single thing in that other world. You will be absolutely invisible in that other world.\\
((Chigusa and Narushige are standing by the school gates.))
C: "Shigeka Narushige. Get down."
N: "What?"
((TT raises one of the tree guns and shoots the bejeebus out of Chigusa.))
RS #2: "Huh? Where's Rakan?"
RS: "He left just a minute ago."
RS #2: "Huh? With who? (That's unusual.)"
RS: "No, he was by himself."
"Ah! The model brothers are gone too."
RS #2: "You're right! They're gone!"
RS: "I bet they went somewhere together. (The three of them.)"
RS #2: "Yeah. They must be really good friends. (They're gone.) Huh."
TT:"This is too easy! So this is the famous Senrou Chigusa."
R: "...................!!"
K:"...................Senrou!? Wha-- You were just shot! What the hell!??? (Hey! Are you all right?)"
N: The shots came from in front of that building. But where...!
But no one's there. No one is there..!!
TT: They can't see me.
Senrou's already dead, I expect. That's taken care of.
Next is his friend over there, and then His Highness's impersonator...
((Chigusa's blood begins to coalese into bandages.))
TT:"........Wha?"
His wounds... His wounds are closing..!?
TT:".....................!!"
And he's looking at me. He's looking at me. Can he see me? Can he..?"
He really... is... a monster..................!!
\\KK: "Senrou Chigusa has escaped into another world."
We want you to pursue Senrou, then eliminate him and all the people associated with him."
KK: "We will give you that Purpose."
"Even you have a Purpose."
"Go and eliminate all the seeds of misfortune."
The Purpose of your life...
TT:"Yes...............!!"
KK: ...is limited to that use.//
Nice cliffhanger, huh? I was about ready to kill the woman.
That will be all.

\\
{{Study Hall: The teacher has caught a cold...}}
Random student(RS): "(Rakan-kun! Come chill with us!)"
Another RS: "(He's not going to do it.)"
RS #3: "(You're so boring, Rakan!)"
RS: "(Rakaaaan!)"
{{Rakan is a person who takes Study Hall very seriously.}}
That will be all.

on 2004-03-25 03:52 pm (UTC)Cool, thanks, and not a problem:-D I just wanted to get an idea of how many people actually read these things. (My guess is that it's between 2-5.)

on 2004-03-28 07:44 am (UTC)Heh! We're learning some of these in Korean class... Who knew "kill two birds with one stone" was Chinese? (Bastardizing western hemisphere, claiming everything as their own...)
(Oh, and have you heard one that's something like, "east question west answer?" Basically asking someone a question and getting a total non-sequitor answer.)
And ahhhh - love for SD! Though I think I'm tending to skim over the trans... The initials confuse me... T.T "Who's talking, C or N? Who was C... Chigusa... Who was Chigusa?" ^^;; I need to get my hands on a copy, ASAP...
(Nice formatting!)

on 2004-03-28 01:43 pm (UTC)The initials are the most important part! Cause that's how you know who's saying what! Once I get some pics up, you'll have an easier time, promise!
And yeah, the formatting was a *bitch*. Took me the better part of two days to fine tune, and there's still mistakes.
