Weekend Update, take II
Mar. 1st, 2004 08:39 pmWent to see a play called Final Countdown last Saturday. Oh man, it was good. Good as in I expected nothing and ended up in tears by the end of the story. The most interesting part was that I went with four non-Japanese speakers, none of whom liked it. Granted, one of them is too cool to like much of anything, but it made me realise how much of humor is dependent on understanding the nuances of the language being used to present it. So much goes on in Japanese (or any language, really) - verb inflections, vocal tones, pronoun choices - that adds meaning beyond the mere words being used. I will definitely be in to see the next play the group puts on.
And oh, did I mention? The dialogue was all a lovely, thick Kansai-ben. Kansai-ben makes me very, very happy.
Hmm. What else? Dinner at a Nepalese restaurant, followed by bar hopping, then pool and karaoke with the Charlie-tachi. We got the new karaoke room at Soundbeat (finally), and it is karaoke heaven. They have the bestest songs ever. Where in America can you sing the Pixies in karaoke?
Jessica and I laid down a rousing rendition of Bust a Move. The night was notable for that reason alone.
That will be all.
