How much do you love me? After a two month hiatus, the fourth chapter of Sugiura's Silver Diamond ran in the February 2004 Ichi Raci and I have taken the time to translate it for you! Sugiura continues to reveal one main plot point per chapter, and there are also some really cool sight/vocabulary gags thrown in as well.

And without further ado:

Silver Diamond: Part IV

(Silver Diamond copyright 2003 by Sugiura Shiho)
(Translation copyright 2003 by gmorrison (hermestrismegistus at operamail.net))
I took the time to translate this, type it out and format it, so please don't take it without my permission.

As usual:
Words in " " are spoken aloud.
Words not in " " are internal dialogue.
Words in ( ) are character asides.
Words in {{ }} are Sugiura's asides.
Words in (( )) are my comments on the text/translation.
Words in [ ] are telepathic communication between Narushige and Kou.
Words in // // are descriptions of action.
Words preceeding an * will be footnoted at the page break.
Double returns = page breaks.
and a new one - words in \\ \\ are flashbacks.

R: "Glasses? Is your eyesight bad?"
C: ".............. No."
"I wear them because I can see too much. It troubles me."

Overflowing With Day-To-Day Life

C: None of them can see it.

C: I don't have any choice. The only person who can see it... Is me.

C: That thing is a puppet that lives by stealing the nourishment from the desert.
    An Ayame Prince.
R: "Chigusa!"

R: "You slept down there again? I've told you - enough is enough. Bring a futon."

C: This is a Sanome Pr--
R: "Morning?"
N: \\"It would be nice if this child were the real Prince."\\
C: "...........Morning."
R: "?" What is up with him? Why's he making such a strange face?
    "Oh!"
Of course. Yesterday, I.... I cried!! Like a little baby!!
{{He's just now remembered.}}
R: "Uh... Um... About yesterday."

R: "About me crying yesterday... Just forget that... It's really embarassing, see."
C: How can he can tell me to 'just forget it?'
R: "Honestly. I'm in my second year of high school; it's really embarassing that I cried like that. Really. Please forget it! Please!"
"Oh! But, don't forget that I got angry! Or that I hit you, either. If it makes you sick to think about it, great. You should remember that I got angry and hit you. Just forget the part about me crying."

C: "................" What an absurd thing to say to me.
R: "You're smiling."
C: That... Somehow....
R: "It gives you a completely different feel. Anyway, I'm going to head downstairs, since I'm going to make breakfast."
C: ".........................."
    .............................I give up.

C: What should I do.........
R: Lessee. Today I'll do the laundry, and clean...and I should probably air out the futon. But first, breakfast.
After I get the rice started I'll make some miso shiru and fried eggs. And after that, I should...
    "...Huh?"
N: "Rakan-kun, good morning."

R: "Good morning, Narushige-san. Uh, how did you... Is that... Miso shiru? You mean you cooked it?"
N: "Yes. I watched how you prepared it yesterday. It would be bad of me to just let you cook all the food for me, after all. I prepared it the same way you did, so it should have the same flavour, but... (Here, taste it)."
R: "Ah, wow! (It's really miso shiru!)"
"...Huh? Are you kidding me? (You really cooked this?)"
N: "Like I said, I watched you cook it yesterday, so I knew how."
R: "You remembered how to do it just by watching me?"
N: "Mmhm."
R: "But the gas sto- I mean, the kitchen tools we have here aren't used in your world, right? How'd you know how to use them?"
N: "As I said, I know because I watched you yesterday. As long as I know how to get the flame to come out, and how to adjust the temperature, I can use it."

R: "Woow! You're really smart!! That's awesome! You're so cool, Narushige-san! (You're really with it!!)"
N: "You- you really think so? (You're flattering me.)"
R: "Yeah. I'm really impressed! What's more, it's been ages since anyone's cooked anything for me..."
N: Ah, of course... this child lives by himself....
"Well then. From now on, I'll do the cooking for you, if you show me how."
R: "Re- really!??" Woah, awesome! Wow, I'm so happy! I'll show you! I'll show you! Thank you!"
N: ".............."

//Narushige flings his arms around Rakan//
R: Um...
    "...Narushige-san?"
N: "Yes?"
    This child is truly adorable.
"...It would be nice to have a little brother like you."
R: ...I'd like to have an older brother like Narushige-san, too. It'd be nice if I did. But...
...Come to think of it. This person is more like a beautiful older sister*. I get butterflies in my stomach whenever I'm around him.
((*This word can mean blood-sister, or any slightly older woman (that you might date, for instance). So there's a bit of innuendo going on here.))

//Chigusa walks in//
R&N: This is not...
R&N: "....................."
//Chigusa stares//
R&N: ...what it looks like.
//Chigusa throws his arms around Narushige and Rakan//
R&N: Whaaaaaaaat!?
K: "Ah! Narushige! Me too! (Let me in.)"
C: "....................."
N: "Kou..."
R: "....................."
N: "Do not constrict. Do not constrict."

C: "I thought... that this was some sort of morning ceremony in your world..."
N: "............"
R: "Ah, no. At any rate, let's eat breakfast."
    "Aaaahhhhh!! Kou!!!"
"He's crawling around in my clothes!!"
N: "Kou! Other people aren't used to that sort of thing!"
R: "Hey, get out of there!! Stop that!!"
K: "You mean, I shouldn't be doing this?"
R: "No you shouldn't!! It's sexual harassment*!!"
{{WESTERN TERMINOLOGY}}
K: "'Sexual harassment'?"
((*The word Rakan and Kou have been using up until the definition is literally 'sekuhara'; an abbreviated transliteration of the English. Thus, people from Chigusa's world are unaware of its meaning.))

R: Sexual harassment: The making of unwanted and offensive sexual advances.
    "Um...!!"
K: ("What does it mean? What does it mean?")
R: The Japanese definition sounds so crass...!!
//BANG//
R: "This is my dictionary."
K: "Woah!"
R: "Do you know how to use it?"
K: "Yeah, I know. (You've got a lot of cool stuff.)"
R: "Look up any words you don't understand with this."
C: ("Here it is.")
K&N: "Sexual harassment: The making of unwanted and offensive sexual advances."
R: "For the love of god, don't read out loud!!!"
//phone rings//
R: "Ah."
//phone rings//
K: "AAA! WHAT IS THAT? AGAIN...?"

//Chigusa dislpays his lightening-fast reflexes and stops Kou from attacking the phone.//
R: *"Nice!"
    "Hello. Rakan speaking."
C: (" 'Nice?' ")
K: (" 'Nice?' ")
R: "Oh. ...from the temple? Yes, hello."
C&K: //reading from dictionary// "("Nice: cool; well done.")"
R: "Yes?"
K: ("Narushige - your cooking's nice! Your cooking's nice!")
N: ("'Nice?' What does that mean?")
R: "What? My family grave?"
((*Rakan is using the transliteration of the English word here, which has become slang in Japan. Thus, Chigusa and Kou yet again have no idea what it means.))

R: "It isn't too bright for you, Narushige-san? (Are you all right?)"
N: "No, not as long as I'm wearing these. Thank you."
{{From Rakan's Grandfather's stylin' glasses collection}}
R: "Chigusa... Wait, you seem fine. (How come?)"
C: "Ah, it's because I have really good eyes."
R&N: You're avoiding the question.
R: "........... You mean your eyes are hard to injure?"
C: "Yup."
R: "Yup?"
Man, these two really stick out. I'm glad I live in the country. (There aren't many people around.)
C: "So you're saying there's a problem with weeds at the grave?"

R: "Yeah. I guess the weeds have been growing really quickly. They told me that the grave is in danger if I don't cut them. It's a good thing today's a weekend. It's disrespectful to one's ancestors not to keep the gravesite tidy. (We have to take care of this, pronto.)"
N: He really is a house husband...
R: Huh. When I last visited not too long ago, there weren't any weeds or anything, but...
C: "So whose grave is it?"
R: "My mother's and my grampa's (and the rest of my ancestors)."
N: "That's right. You live on your own, don't you? That must be very hard for you."
R: "Yeah, but I'm pretty much used to it."
But come to think of it, right now...

R: Somehow, this is... Fun....
R: "How about your family, Narushige-san."
N: "....I don't have any family. I'm utterly alone."
R: Ah. (I suppose that was a bad subject to bring up.) "Oh. Oh, all right. How 'bout you, Chigusa?"
C: "............... Don't have a family either."

{{SILENCE}}
R: Oh. Um, okay. (I guess none of us has a family. I suppose that was a prying sort of thing to ask. Ack, now I feel bad.) Crap! I keep brining us back to dark topics of conversation. Um... Um... Recover. Recover...
"Erm. Anyway (um... yeah...) at least we're all friends!" //he takes Narushige & Chigusa by the hand// "We're friends!”

R: “.........................” Of course, now I’ve gone and made things even stranger. What on earth am I doing....? I'm not a kid anymore!
N: “.........................”
R: I AM SUCH AN IDIOT.... When I let their hands go, I have to get... I have to get the timing right.

R: Ah! We’re here.
“Erm. Here we are! My family grave.”
C&N: “.............................”
R: Oh my lord. I haven’t been this embarassed in ages. I better pull up the weeds and get the hell out of here. They told me the grave was in danger if I didn’t pull them. I suppose they meant the weeds were choking the base of the headstone. I wonder how...

//The entire grave is covered in weeds.//
R: It's...

R: It's a curse!!!
N: "Woah, look at that."
R: “Wha-- What is this?”
    This is scaaaaaaaaaaary!!
N: "............................"
R: “It wasn’t like this at all the last time I was here! Woah!! I’m so sorry, ancestors!!
    Wha-- What should I do?
Is this some sort of supernatural manifestation?
"I have... I have to pull these up right now!”

R: ("Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!!")
{{He hates horror movies}}
C: “Rakan, is it okay to pull this up?”
R: Aaah! There will absolutely be rumors that the Sawa family grave is haunted!!

//Chigusa pulls the entire headstone out of the earth//
R: WHAT ARE YOU DOINNNNGGGGGGG?????”
C: “Huh? (Was that a bad idea?)”
R: We're going to be cursed.....!!*
N: “Chi-- Chigusa!!! You have to... gravestones... Respectfully!”
C: “(You mean I should pull the gravestone out respectfully?)”
N: “(No.) Kou, wake up. Kou.”
((*Japanese are cremated, not buried, and gravestones can contain the ashes of over twenty people, above ground. So Chigusa has just exposed the remains of quite a few of Rakan's family members to the light of day. Cursed, indeed.))

//Kou transforms into a sword & Narushige cuts down the weeds//
N: “It’s okay, Rakan-kun. This is probably due to the fact that your mother was a Sanome.”

N: “You’re a Sanome, so your mother was one as well.”
...the nourishment from her corpse is probably...
“It’s a Sanome’s grave. I think that's probably what's influencing these plants to grow so wildly.”
R: “...............................” My mother... was a Sanome too?
    ”I... I see........”
N: “At any rate, it’s better if you don’t touch the grave at all. (There's a possibility they might start growing again, and that would be a problem.)”
R: “Okay...”
N: “Where should I put these weeds?”
R: “Oh, um, there’s a compost bin in that open area over there...”
N: “All right, I’ll head over. Hey, Chigusa, you help out too.”
R: “...............................”
R: Ah, that was direct.
    ("Thanks.")

R: Huh? There’s one little flower...
    “....................”
    ”I’m home!!”
N: “Huh? You’re going to the garden?”
R: “Yup.”
//Chigusa takes off his glasses and peers//
C: “.............................”
N: ? What is he looking at?

N: “Hey, you’ve got a flower in there?”
R: “Yup. It was blooming in a little nook near the grave, so I brought it here. As a representative.”
N: “A representative?”
R: “There you go. Sorry I said you were a curse! I’m going to plant you here as a representative of the weeds at the grave!”
N: This child talks to plants as though it were normal!
R: //irritated// “Oh. Sorry about that just now. I was talking to myself. It’s normal for me, so don’t worry.”
N: “No, I thought it was really cute. (Sorry for laughing.)”

C: He really is a good kid. That’s a problem.
R: \\”You smiled. It gives you a completely different feel.”\\
C: He makes me feel emotions I’d long forgotten. When I make him cry, when I make him angry, when I make him hit me... It makes me sort of... happy.
R: \\”Here, drink this.”\\
C: At first, I only noticed that he had the same facial features as the Prince. But this gentle atmosphere isn't that of the Prince. It's that of a ...Sanome.
The next thing I realised was that that atmosphere had a name -- 'Rakan.'"
...I'd been searching for this... this living thing called a 'Sanome.' The Final Hope of my world. That which can return me to life. That which allows me to continue fighting. That which I need to deplete...
That which is a necessary... tool.

C: A tool that just fell into my hands. I planned to take it back with me, but now...
R: "Hey, you two! Head on into the house ahead of me. I'm going to clean up back here and wash my hands. Here's the key."
N: "All right. Thank you; we'll head in."

C: "...................."
     "Narushige Shigeka."
N: "Yes? ('K, the door's open.)"
C: "There's something I want to ask you."
N: "Huh?"
C: "Is there a way to keep yourself from liking someone too much?"
N: "..............What?"
C: "I don't want to like Rakan too much."

N: "....................................."
"What do you mean by that?"
     I can't... I can't get a handle on this person at all.
C: ".........I have no choice but to take the Sanome back and deplete him."
"It's been ages since I've experienced this sensation."
N: What sensation?
C: "I can't remember any way to deal with this."
N: He can't 'remember?'
C: "I suppose, somehow, I can continue without coming to like him."
"It will cause problems for me if I like him more than I do now. It's too bad, but if I take him back there with me, he can never return."

N: "........................................."
(It seems like he's really agonising over this)
I occasionally thought he talked too much, sometimes... I don't really understand... But speaking of, that thing he just said...
"You said, 'Take him back there with me'.... 'Return?' How...? Do you mean we have the power to go back?"
C: "Yes, we can go back."
R: ........................Back to the world they came from?
     "You can go back?"
N: "Ah! Rakan-kun."
R: "How?"

C: "In the garden, there is a distortion that connects my world with your world. We can return using that."
N: "..........The garden?"
C: "Narushige and I were both flung here from that world, and we ended up in this garden. So far so good?"
R: "Yes... certainly. But you mean that that distortion is somewhere in the garden?"
'Distortion?' In other words, like a 'warp in the atmosphere?'
    "So this distortion..."
    (Woah, that's really otherworldly!)
"I suppose normal people can't see it, right?"
C: "Yup, but. I can. Because I have good eyes. It's what I was checking earlier."
//Narushige remembers Chigusa taking off his glasses and peering//
N: Ah... so that's what he was doing earlier..... Checking....
C: "So, if I feel like going back, I can return whenever I want to."
R: "......................................"
........what? He can return whenever he wants to? (Wow, other worlds are really user-friendly.)
........That's the reason. I thought he was abnormally calm about being in this situation.
I wonder why he didn't say anything until now?
It's too bad he didn't say anything to Narushige-san. (Ah, well. I should probably get the futons ready before noon...)
Ah! I'll bet Chigusa will tell him he never mentioned it because Narushige-san never asked..."
{{Bingo!}}
N: ("Why the hell did you wait until now to tell me?!")
C: ("Huh? Because you never asked...")

R: "Wha? Oh, I suppose you're going to sleep in my room again tonight? And Narushige as well?"
C: "Well, yeah. You're a very important creature, after all."
N: "..........................."

N: It's just that I don't know Senrou very well, and I'd be really upset if he did anything to this child....
K: ("I'm sleeping here too.")
N: "Sorry, but it's because I'm worried."
R: "'Kay. But there isn't room to spread three futon in this room."
"All right. Here's what we'll do. Each of you grab your own futon and we'll spread them in the guest room downstairs.
We can fit three futon in the guest room.
Well, they fit, but... this... oddly enough, this somehow reminds me of something.
    A school trip...?

R: Well. At any rate, I should get to bed soon. I have school tomorrow, after all.
"Okay, I'm going to turn out the lights. Night!"
N: "Good night!"
K: "Night!"
C: "Night!"
R: "Night."

R: No, that's not it.

R: A family trip.
I can't let myself get too attached to this way of life.
    It's..... really comfortable.
    I... am an idiot.

R: After all, these people are going to go home.

//And the chapter ends with yet another visitor from Chigusa's world materialising in Rakan's garden. Jeez, Sugiura! How much longer can you keep this up?//

That will be all.

Glad to see you back in action... I haven't checked LJ in ages and suddenly there you are. God, that sounded like some cheesy pop song.

Anywho, I have gifties for you and I know your Birthday is coming up eventually(aren't I good..). I still need to visit your corner of the hole.... Would you like me to come up your way or would you like to plan another trek out to Nagoya?

Peace

Good gods. I'd forgotten about my birthday. And here or Nagoya is good, although I'll need time to plan an N-town trip if there is to be one...

You're welcome. It's good fun.

Seven more days until the next Ichi Raci. Is it sad that I'm counting?
