akujunkan...because a) I can say it's translation practise, b) it was raining/sleeting/hailing all day, and c) I am a fandom tool and proud.
And so please to find below a translation of the (important bits of) the official Advent Children website:
The Japanese on the site is literary/marquee Japanese, which means it has to be wrestled kicking and screaming into English. Thus, my translation straddles the line between literal and English-friendly.
And gods above and below, I am now convinced that flash mediaplayer is one of the more effective tools created by Satan for tormenting humanity. What the hell are web designers thinking?
Anyway:
CHARACTERS
Sephiroth:
A member of Soldier, Shinra's elite military troops, and a legendary swordsman, he was once even lauded a hero. However, after discovering that he was an experiment created by Shinra, he was overcome by a violent hatred of humanity. It was that abhorrence that led him to become a threat to the very existence of the planet itself.
Sephiroth was believed to have been defeated, but...
Traces of Sephiroth are now appearing before Cloud's eyes.
Cloud:
He was hired blade for the Shinra-resistance group "Avalance," but became sucked into the whirlpool of the giant battle surrounding them. He fought for the sake of the world and saved the planet.
His various memories of the past were confused, and he had forgotten who he truly was, but he was able to rediscover all of these things during the travels he undertook in the original FFVII. However, he has now rejected the company of others and lives in solitude.
SHINRA:

This site is currently recruiting Shinra company members, and there are plans to include wallpaper downloads and other goodies exclusive to registered fans.
We'll also be giving away "Shinra Company Cards" to lottery winners chosen from the list! Details will be announced on this site at a later date.
(The second page has a picture of the company card with the warning that the actual card may differ slightly from the picture, and asking for the fans' understanding.)
Storyline:
Page one:
FFVII was released in January 1997. It sold over 9,000,000 copies worldwide - 3,900,000 (including the International version) in Japan, and 5,440,000 overseas in America and Europe (9,340,000 in total; figures taken in March of 2003).
A strong fan base has existed ever since FFVII's release. It's been announced that the long-awaited sequel is not a game, but a high quality CGI movie. Although it isn't a game, whe hope you look forward to this new release.

(Summary of FFVII)
The story opens in the Mako metropolis Midgar. The corporation called The Shinra Company used Mako energy to control politics. Electricity generators called "Mako furnaces" were constructed in their home base in Midgar.
Incidentally, the Mako energy Shinra company advertised with the slogan "Towards Eternal Happiness," was nothing less than the source of all life, the energy of the planet itself. "If things continue like this, the planet will eventually die."
Page three:
Those who were aware of this fact formed the resistance group "Avalance" and engaged in resistance activities.
And so, they eventually resolved to blow up the Mako reactors. Among the members of Avalance was a former member of Soldier - Cloud.
Page four:
Cloud was nothing but a former Soldier - without emotions, principles, or allegiances.
He entered the fight as a mercenary hired by Avalance. However, despite his emotionless exterior, the fight became his motivation, and Cloud was forced to ask questions about his lost past and the significance of his very existence. And so a cruel journey began.
Part five:
Two years have passed since the original FFVII.
Each of those who once protected humanity spends their days in relaxation.
The Northern Crater - that was where it began.
Suddenly, "Star Scar Syndrome" is spreading across the world and this new threat brings agony to mankind.
And then, three men appear before Cloud. Among the three, Cloud sees traces of the fallen former hero.
That will be all.
