Today's Picture for Thursday the 30th was of:

a random night scene in Kawaramachi, which is Kyoto's main entertainment district. That's a pachinko parlor in the background. For those of you who've never heard of pachinko before, it's a form of gambling in which one purchases buckets of ball bearings and feeds them into a machine, where they cascade down to the bottom and fall into little cups or holes along the way (or don't). Depending on which of the little cups or holes they do or don't fall into, one wins prizes like cigarettes or gum which can be convienently sold at shady little cubicles near the pachiko parlor that are totally not related to the pachinko parlor, oh no siree, for large sums of money (because gambling is illegal in Japan).

Pachinko parlors are second only to love hotels in the amount of neon, kitschy decoration, and lame music they employ; plus they're LOUD. The pachinko parlor in this picture is actually quite subdued for what it is.

That will be all.
