plum blossoms! The blooming of plum blossoms is a sign of incipient spring, and thus a huge cultural trope in Japan. The Shinto shrine where I took this photograph--Kitano Tenmangu--is one of the most important in Japan, as well as one of the most famous plum blossom viewing sites in the city. I happen to pass through it almost every day.
