...I signed a petition and wrote a one-page letter to be faxed to (still-)President Bush expressing my dismay at U.S. inaction concerning the current situation in Gaza. And this isn't just some anonymous Internet petition thing--I wrote that fucker: it contains my full name, occupation, and address.

The main reason I did it? Because the first two times I passed by the protestors, I thought Man, I'd like to sign that, but if I do, there go my chances for the Foreign Service. And then I realised that just the fact that normal people would even think something like that in the face of this catastrophe is one of the reasons why it's still continuing.

So.

That will be all.

The first time I heard about this was the only time I've seen protesters, in Chicago on Dec 28. I had no idea what was going on.
Now that I do...I wish I'd see more protesters.
I've never really understood the whole Israel thing, and the parts I do understand I know I don't understand fully, but the whole thing and where we stand on it just seems so opposed to everything logical that I just...ugh

Agreed. It's not even that I'm especially sympathetic to Middle Eastern Islam1, but really? Turning Palestine into a gigantic violation of civilian human rights? Is not the way to convince Palestinian radicals to quit targeting Israel.

For what it's worth, a really good book about the current state of the Israel/Palestine conflict is Jimmy Carter's Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid. The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy is another good book that does a good job of explaining why the U.S. position is what it is. Segev's One Palestine is a history of the area under British rule. Joe Sacco's Palestine is a graphic novel (written in the mid-90s, if I remember correctly) about the situation that so good AU uses it as a textbook on the conflict. Finally, Once Upon a Country is a hulking first person look at life in the country.

Christ, I'm a booktard.
