There are some days when I just really need Japanese. "Because a suitable apartment* was not located in time, it has been decided that I will stay with my aunt and uncle." There. Nice and to the point, and best of all, with no blame apportioned to anyone in particular.

I just got off the phone with said aunt and uncle, who are being very helpful and hospitable about the whole thing. Only problem is, while they're family, they aren't intimate family, and I feel very awkward imposing (because I don't feel I know them well enough to justify the intrusion on their lives). I was trying to explain this to my aunt, and to thank her for the help, because I am genuinely grateful. Only problem is, I could not for the life of me get the damn words out in English. Oh, I had plenty I wanted to say: 本当に助かる and お世話になる and 伯母さんに迷惑かけりたくないのに, even freakin' 恩に着る was ready to role of the tip off my tongue, but nothing useful was about to make its way out of my mouth. Which left me "Um.."ing and "Erm..."ing into the phone, sounding like an inarticulate idiot.

Not the kind of person you'd want to be 邪魔しますing your house, right?

Guh. I am not today's winner.

That will be all.

*I would have been fine with HOOD FABULOUS PROJECT LIVING, but since mes parents are the ones cosigning on the lease, that option did not remain on the table for long.

aw man. Hope you are able to find something once you are there. It's most likely that students in your program are having the same problems.

The 'hood' is a scary place. I'd have to agree with your parents.

Good luck.

Thing about the 'hood is, they rent to people like me. Doesn't matter that I was never late for a single rent payment; I'm screwed by the fact that all my previous landlords live half a world away and don't speak English. Having no references disqualified me right off the bat for some of the NW places I was looking at. And while I do have income (and make good money while I'm making it) freelance translation doesn't provide a steady salary, which is another mark against me. I've been scoping neat places left and right, but they're usually snatched up by townies before I can even get down for a visit.

In other words, my desire to move out of the countryside has triple-whammied me! ^.

I had no income when I applied to some places, but I had investments in my name. Maybe if you have money put away, you can show them a current bank statement? or if your parent had some secret stash in your name?
Or maybe if you can move there early enough, you can find something and then you won't have to impose on your aunt too much.

Sorry I couldn't be much help. Most of my friends from school like me moved away from the area after graduation since it was too expensive to live there. >_
