Disaster Widely Averted

I was looking forward to a leisurely evening of Daejanggeum and Death By Black Hole last night when I suddenly found myself pressganged into an effort to fill every available receptacle in the house with water. Then it was on to making sure all the kerosene lanterns were in working order, and strategizing about whom we'd contact for help with my failing laptop battery in the event that power and phone lines went down. My protestations that we live in the most meteorologically staid area of the country fell on deaf ears. Nevertheless, la famile was convinced that we would be stranded under half a foot of ice by midnight.
Lo and behold, I awoke this morning to find no ice, no power outtages, no arctic temperatures...just as I'd expected. Deprived of her chance to experience this drama firsthand, ma mere has been glued to The Weather Channel since waking, a constant stream of disbelief and consternation with other people's weather issuing from her mouth: "Ah," "Oh my god," and my personal favorite, "Woah!" (she sounds like Beavis).
I never thought I'd see the whole "The Sky Is Falling" reaction of my collegues to a hurricane approaching Kyushu here. But now I have.
That will be all.
