The overwhelming consensus in the comments appears to be that something else, something--sinister--crashed into the Pentagon.
To which I respond, then what the hell happened to the actual Flight 77?
Unless I am somehow missing something subtle in their arguments, it would appear the conspiracy nerds have managed to overlook the forest they're standing in while theorising mass desertification. This whole thing is of interest because I so rarely find myself not agreeing with anyone who claims that the military industrial complex is a sneaky, lying bastard.

what the hell happened to the actual Flight 77?
There was no Flight 77. Whatever crashed into the Pentagon was released by the Government in a planned effort to bring the american people to accept the need to go to war. The flight manifesto was a fake. All voice recordings were done by staff involved with the plot. The people in the Pentagon killed were an unfortunate yet acceptable loss.
This was coordinated to coincide with the known plan of planes being flown into the Twin Towers. Everything has been done so a plausible denial can be maintained.

It's not a theory I subscribe to, but there was a very quick leap in deducing who was to blame for the attacks. And it's that leap which has always given me concern.
