I used to be a huge opponent...
Jun. 20th, 2005 01:32 am...of scientific research into the origins of homosexuality. First, because I don't think it's rooted in any one factor, and second because it's a losing battle whatever the results of the research. Homosexuality really has no basis in genetics? See, it's an immoral choice, which should be criminalised. Homosexuality is entirely due to genetics? See, it's a genetic disease, which should be cured. Once the origin(s) of homosexuality cease being nebulous, those arguing for tolerance are on losing ground because whichever way the results fall, they've got the rhetoric in place.
But if ever there was a time to conclusively discover those origins, it's now, especially if they are rooted in genetics. Just think of the bind it puts the religious right in - homosexuality is a genetic 'malfunction' after all. So how should society treat it? By deregulating stem cell research in hopes of finding a cure? By 'selective termination' of fetuses testing positive for homosexuality? It would be delightful to see what the fuckers came up with, if I didn't find the idea of 'correcting' homosexuality so odious to begin with.
That will be all.
