One of the more interesting readings I did for my gender studies major was a study demonstrating that differences in male and female sexual behaviors have more to do with social situations than biology. In a nutshell, it suggested that (controlling for religious beliefs, etc.) women aren't less promiscuous because they naturally want to Raise Babies With Their True Loves, but because potentially ending up raped and/or killed has a chilling effect on their desire to sleep with someone they just met a few hours previously. Which kinda ties in with what you've mentioned above.
