Hella-big LJ update
Jul. 8th, 2003 04:31 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I wrote a really awesome lj post last night. I also wrote about 10 pages of fic. Guess when the power decided to go out.
Took the suckers 14 hours to get it back on.
Massive amounts of lightening. Blue lightening. Red lightening. It was the most beautiful storm I've ever witnessed.
And now, owing to a severe case of lj withdrawal,
akujunkan and the LJ Players present:
CUT TAG FRENZY!
From
amasugiru's page:

take the nerd test.
and go to mewing.net. a nerd utopia.
This might make some sense to
hazardblue, who recced the fic to me. I, however, couldn't get past the first chapter.

You are If You Are Prepared, by Cybele!
You were posted as a work in progress, and the day
you finished, everyone read the last chapter
and sobbed their eyes out. Your take on why
Voldemort had it out for Harry is better than
what we've heard of JKR's so far. Your
emotional scenes are perfect, too; you get the
desired impact perhaps more than any other
writer.

From an lj long forgotten:
The Fandom Meme
What was the very first fandom you got involved in?
The Vampire Chronicles was the first fandom I was involved in as a writer. My friends and I used to sit in the back of class during middle school and write VC specs, although we didn't know that that's what they were at the time, this being well before we had access to the net.
The first fandom I became involved in online was, of course, The X-Files.
What is the most recent fandom to catch your interest?
Well, if
hazardblue and
metal_dog5 have their way, Smallville. But right now, I'm working on a Harry Potter novel and some smaller fics. I'd also like to write a Fake fanfiction, just because the state of writing in that fandom is so abysmal.
Fandom you've stayed loyal to the longest?
I'm pretty much a serial monogamist when it comes to fanfic. I find a series that captivates me and stick with it, only occasionally emerging into other universes for air. But in terms of length of involvement, X-Files would be the first - this is the fandom where I cut my teeth, learned to distinguish good writing from bad, and basically taught myself grammar, characterisation, and how to write description and plot.
I'm currently head-over-heels in love with Saiyuki, and still have some fics percolating in that fandom although they've been put on the back burner while I do my HP thang. All-in-all, I was active in XF for about four or five years, and Saiyuki for about two, going on three.
Fandom(s) you're most passionate about?
Originally, The X-Files - it's where I taught myself to write, interact in fandom, and fill in those annoying canon plot holes. Unfortunately, the actual series continued well past its prime, and eventually I just lost interest.
Saiyuki is my current love. I'll step away for air every few months, but I always come back for more. What a great series! The BL is about as close to canon as anything you'll ever find, which gives one a lot of fodder as an author. And I love the challenge of trying to write an English-language fic that retains the tone of the Japanese source material.
Harry Potter (anyone sense a trend in these answers?) is where most of my attention lies at the moment. The thing that's so intriguing about this fandom is that the books are only just transitioning from children's books to young adult books, which means that there is a lot of potential to write fics touching on the horror and darkness of this universe that Rowling, for obvious demographic reasons, does not make explicit.
Fandom(s) you wish you could get into, but can't?
Stargate SG-1 is my cheesy!sci-fi television show of choice, but I just don't have time to sit down and explore the fennish universe built around the series. Nothing sucks like pouring time and effort into a fic only to realise that the ideas you thought were novel have been done to death twenty times over.
I'd also love to write Farscape fanfiction, because Farscape is, hands down, the best show ever to be aired on network TV. Ever. But the characters are already so well-rounded and complex, it would be hard to add anything to them that isn't there already.
Fandoms you're curious about, but never had the chance to get into?
See above, re: Farscape and Stargate. I'm also intrigued by (in no particular order): Yami no Matsuei, Buffy, Good Omens, Garth Nix fic, any rps aside from bbs.
Back in the day I dabbled in La Femme Nikita and Once A Thief (back when OAT was only aired in Canada and you had to join tape trees to get it), but never really got serious about either fandom.
Fandom that's been the most fun to be involved in?
Saiyuki, because it's currently at optimal fandom density (which is likely to change now that the DVDs are being released Stateside and an English-language manga translation is in the works). The main Saiyuki MLs are large enough to be fun, but small enough that I don't have to wade through 500 annoying fangirl!squeal messages a day to get to the gold.
There are also one or two extremely egotistical, self-absorbed, self-serving (and in one case absolutely rotten) authors active in Saiyuki fandom, and watching their antics makes for a fun spectator sport.
I also love the Koori no Mamono no Monogatari fandom because a) it's the smallest fandom I've ever participated in, and b) the people active in Koori fandom are just the best. It'll be interesting to see where the fandom goes now that the series has reached its conclusion.
Fandom that's been the least fun to be involved in?
Hmm. There are a lot of elements in Harry Potter fandom that annoy me - the saturation with inexperienced, immature authors (both in terms of writing and inflexibility when it comes to pairings/receiving criticism, etc), the willingness of HP fen to rip off Japanese fanart without asking permission of the original artists, the idiocy of many list subscribers (yes, spoiler space. It's been expained to you 20,000 times, often with very small, simple words. Why. Can't. You. Use. It?).
There are also a few personalities in manga/anime fandom who truly annoy me - all of whom with the attitude that they are the only people on the ML/in the fandom who understand the Japanese language and Japanese culture, and are thus entitled to lord it over the other listmembers in the most obnoxious way possible. This is as irksome, in its own way, as the members of those fandoms who know nothing about Japanese culture and couldn't care less about learning.
Fandom you're ashamed to admit you were involved in?
Luckily, none.
Are you looking for a new fandom, or actively avoiding getting sucked into something new?
I'm going to say "Smallville," and let the appropriate parties determine which of the above questions I'm answering.
Are there any fandoms that just don't do it for you at all?
LotR. Good gods, why? Why? I read The Hobbit in first grade and The Lord of the Rings in third, and I have such love for those books - they did more to increase my vocabulary and turn me into a reader, than any other title, ever. I'm so fiercely protective of the LotR universe (for all its faults), and to have so many teenyboppers, who have a) seen the movies without reading the books/read the books after seeing the movies decide that b) the "point" of LotR is how cute Elijah/Orlando/Viggo is, is just nauseating. I know LotR fandom existed well before the movies were even in preproduction, and I know there are some mature authors writing in this universe, but I can't bring myself to wade through the crap to find them.
Also, being firmly opposed to the very idea of boybands, I have no interest whatsoever in bbs. End of story.
What fandoms do you think you will probably get into at some point in the future?
I sit at my computer with
hazardblue perched on one shoulder and
metal_dog5 perched on the other, both whispering, Smallville.
teal_geezus sent me Suikoden in the mail, so I'm pretty much obligated to write her at least one fic based in that universe. :-D
I'm rather intrigued by the idea of fanfiction based on Garth Nix's Abhorsen series, but again, I have the sneaking suspicion that the authors writing Nix fanfics aren't going to be terribly good in the quality department.
If I could make a movie (or another movie) out of any of my fandoms, what would it be like and who would star?
Hmm. If a live action Saiyuki movie were even possible, I would get these people (assuming that they were a) alive b) actors, and c) of the appropriate ages at the time of filming) to play these parts:
Genjyou Sanzou: Kurt Cobain - the greasy blond hair, cigarette problem, attitude.
Cho Hakkai: Peter Wingfield - Methos is Cho Hakkai's western cognate.
Sha Gojyou: James Marsters - as a pimp, yeah. With blood red hair? No.
Son Gokuu: Keith Flint - he's got the manic energy.
Kougaiji: Michael Wincott has the attitude, but the voice is all wrong.
Dokugakuji: Brandon Lee - good natured, built, loyal.
Yaone: A young Alberta Watson might have the gravity to play this part.
Ririn: Christ, I don't know. Maybe Christina Ricci could pull it off.
I'm not even going to pretend that I could cast the Homura-tachi, so we're sticking with the mangaverse here. As you can see, weirdness abounds. I doubt anyone else will see any of these people in these roles, but oh well.
What squicks you to the point that it would keep you from reading a story?
I have yet to encounter anything in a fic that made me stop reading due to gross-out factor, but below is a (far from exhaustive) list of things which will cause me to cease reading a fic in anger:
1) "Not beta'd. Tra-la-la"
2) "Enlish are not my frist language. Sorry for any misstake."
3) Abuse of the English language in general, including, but not limited to: misspellings, bad grammar, lack of familiarity with the source material, purple prose, bad characterisation.
4) Mary Sues and OOCs.
5) "If I don't get feedback on this story, I will Never Write Again! If you want to know what happens, send me feedback!"
6) "If you don't like it, press [back button/delete]. I don't want feedback that isn't masturbatory."
7) Highly implausible crossovers.
8) "The new [Hanson/Evanescence/Bon Jovi/Linkin Park] song really summarises the relationship between [pairing of choice]." (Cue songfic)
9) Mpreg - not for any squick factor, but I have yet to encounter an mpreg that isn't silly.
10) Fangirl Japanese - oh, how I hate thee!
11) Inclusion of any of the following in the body of the fic: "snuck" (it is not a word); emoticons, author inserts.
Actually, I'm cataloguing and expounding on the above in the "13 Things I Hate About Fandom" series I'm currently running over at the Akujunkan blog (as opposed to the Akujunkan lj, which you are reading now), so I won't go into detail here, though I could wax eloquent on this topic for hours.
And now, brought to you by

bloody_american: Yeah. If I didn't have friends like you, where would I have gotten my latest waste of time meme? Oh, and check the Procul His thread for my thesis comment on why I'm disappointed by this fic.
Also, if you're looking for some good H/D recs, I like: Maya's Underwater Light and Lady of Shalott's A Weather of the Heart (and its sequels.
