I'm posting it. So there.
First, I give you a brief birthday morning skit:
AJK: Morning, Mom.
Ma Mere: Morning, honey.
AJK: We're out of coffee beans.
Ma Mere: There's a bag in the pantry--oh crap! I completely forgot to run the dishwasher last night.
AJK: What else are you forgetting?
Ma Mere: I dunno. What?
AJK: Happy birthday, AJK!
Ma Mere: It's your birthday today?
-FINIS-
So, with that auspicious beginning, I determined to spend a quiet day at home reading and editing. Until, that is, I got a call from
bran420_7 and
wombatdeamor, whom I've known for over half my life and half my life, respectively. We spent an evening drinking, at Bennigan's, where wombat was good enough to get me a birthay brownie (awesome), before proceeding to a change of venue, where we were joined by Bran's mom and her boyfriend. Then we changed venue again, before I went home during the early dawn hours. And thus ended my birthday.
Only to be resumed on Sunday, with a drive down to B-town, where my sister cooked me an awesome spaghetti lunch, and where I got presents. We also spent a fun afternoon chilling on the square and inside Caveat Emptor, where I found a translation of Water Margin and didn't buy it (I'm kicking myself for this now).
We then headed over to Vintage Phoenix, where I had a chance to check out Testament, a Vertigo title I'm looking into, and discovered the first issue of Fell, which is Warren Ellis' new book, and which looks awesome. We hit a few more (book)stores on the square, one of my old ethnic grocery haunts (now much expanded), and then it was time to drive home. Oh yeah, we also hit up one of the Big Big City Barnes and Nobles, where I got this book. Excellent birthday.
But the best thing about it Was this:

Yes, that is an actual, bona fide hundred-plus-years-old ukiyo-e print. And it's mine. It was given to my grandmother by her boyfriend after his visit to Japan, and has been passed down in my family ever since. Someone (the boyfriend?) has written "Hiroshige" on the print, but I'm not sure which Hiroshige that would be, and the print sure appears to be signed "Arinaka." But anyway, I repeat: How awesome is that?
That will be all.
