Hwang Jin-Yi being a K-drama which I learned of via the ever-useful
nokiirat's lj. It actually started sometime late last year but I wanted to make sure that a good 1/2 of the series was available before I started watching. (Nothing sucks like getting into a show only to discover that it's no longer availabe (read: King Of The Wind)).
And a short rundown:
The series centers on a young child abandoned to the care of a Buddhist monastery by her mother, who is apparently a court dancer. The child is obsessed with finding mom; when her attempt to do just that fails, she becomes obsessed with becoming a courtesan. Unfortunately the monks are not so into this, for reasons which become clear midway through the ep.
My impressions thus far are that the costumes are nice and the actors talented. My main complaint is that the soundtrack is overly modern and highly intrusive, as are the copious timesink montage flashbacks and dance scenes. The filmographers also seem very fond of annoying effects like time lapse and background blur. While they aren't poorly executed they do prevent me from losing myself in the series, as they're highly incongruous with the timeperiod.
Still, I'm a big fan of historical drama, so I'll give it a go for a few more episodes at least.
That will be all.
