Well, I know you haven't read Ciaran Carson's Shamrock Tea yet, and you really should. It's unlike anything else out there.
Although, I am loathe to rec it to you, because it's the best of his works. The others are excellent of course, but you will have abnormally high expectations if you read this one first.
Off the top of my head I'd also rec: The Thief and its sequel The Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner which are both YA and can be read in an afternoon.
