Well, Japan is the most expensive country in Asia, but the currency is worth less than the dollar and considerably less than the Euro, and I've been told by several British friends that prices in the UK are higher. Don't know about mainland Europe though.
Korea is much less expensive than the States (unless you want bbq!), especially when it comes to food and travel, and the youth hostels are inexpensive and clean.
But yeah, I wasn't even thinking about flights, and mine to Japan were always pretty hefty.
