Ah! No! No fair to do this to a language geek! To put this on more familiar ground, Jones is a prof at Newcastle (I think) in Britain, who was asked to do a weekly series of lessonettes on classical Latin for a newspaper, which ended up being published in book form (http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/bmcr/1997/97.10.12.html). The result is an awesome refresher book for someone who's already studied, and a good bare bones intro for someone who would like to study. It's got loads of British humor, always a plus.

He's done one for Greek as well (http://www.amazon.com/Learn-Ancient-Greek-Latin-Language/dp/0715627589), which I started before heading to Japan, but haven't picked up since returning.

I think the best thing about both of the books is that even if you don't stick with them, you still pick up lots of cultural tidbits, and have been well amused for the time you put in.

And I just might take you up on that ill-advised throw away closer line. (Maybe even for Latin, too!) You don't know the floodgate you have just opened;-)
